What was the best AGP video card today (ATI or Nvida)

Just curious since AGP is being phased out as a standard what was the best video card availible for the AGP socket....

Also, I just stated that you can find them cheap now. I said nothing of it being faster/better.

The 7800gs, despite being the faster card, will lag behind ATi in the typical games, bf2 and cod2

How does the X850XT compare to the 9800 PRO. I have the 9800 Pro right now and I just want to do a little upgrade. Will I see much of a difference....

Bolded. That is the current fastest AGP card. Will eat alive a X850XT PE. But pretty expensive.

A 7800GS is the best AGP card right now performance/price/feature wise.

Likewise overpriced though. The 7600 GT being released now looks promising. If bang for the rupee is a factor rather than just best at any cost I would prolly look at that or an X800 16 pipe variant. Scuttlebutt is that 79xx's may appear too (other than the limited Gaywad).

steppinthrax - what CPU do you have and how much memory are you packing? The difference will be night and day providing you aren't running some 3 year old CPU.

RAM is cheap . . . go getting to 1GB relatively fast RAM is usually no problem.

the x850xt will still be twice as powerful as a 9800p on a 2.4Ghz P4 CPU . . . provided the AA/AF and or resolution are increased to offload more work to the GPU.

The only game, in reviews I read, that the 850XT/PE beat out a eVGA 7800GS CO Superclock card was in FEAR. In everything else the eVGA card won outright or tied. Officially the reviewers declare the eVGA card as best. Its true there is a faster card (Gainward) but its hard to come by because they were made in limited numbers and not originally sold in America. Not mention they are very expensive. I went from a ATI 9800PRO 256 card to the 7800GS CO Superclock and the difference was substancial. I highly reccomend the eVGA as far as AGP cards go. PCIe however is now the better way to go if you can afford the upgrade.

It comes with a 15 day garauntee from new egg and 90 day garuantee from evga. What do you have to loose?

It seems that the ATI X1600 is better then the X850. The X1600 also contains more memory up to 512MB. It is also AGP. Anybody have any ideas on this........

This guy hit the nail on the head, I agree.
Now there is the 7600gt which is allmost as fast as a 7800gs but cheaper. Thats it.
No the x1600 is no where near the speed of any of these cards,don't let the 512 memory fool you.

In a review I read, the 7600GT on AGP beat the 7800GS AGP in most benchmarks that didn't use Antialiasing. Most likely if you have a slower AGP system you probably wouldn't be using Antialiasing anyway. The 7600GT is a lot cheaper than the 7800GS too.

yes - wrong.

the 1600 series is MUCH slower than an x850xt.

and the OP's system would be fine for a x850xt or 7800gs.
