What was that old game called?

It was an early electronic game with a board that you could write on with crayons or water based markers. The board was maybe 14"x14" or so with graph squares printed on it. At the upper end of the board was a raised plastic housing with the controls and an old school LCD.

The object of the game was to find a hidden submarine. The LCD showed the range to the sub, you had to triangulate to find its position and then drop depth charges on it.

Oh yeah the sub could be at one of three depth levels too.

Since I was born in the late 70's, I can't help you. Sounds like a cool game though

I had that!!! Hmmm if I choose depth 1 or 3 and miss the game will tell me off by 1 or off by 2 so I know what to pick next turn, BUT if i pick depth 2 the first time I may just get luck and sink the sub in one try.

yes but what was it called? (just a bump, I know you don't remember 🙂)

Was it Sub Search by Milton Bradley?

My brother and I had this game, but it didn't have any type of LCD thingy like you described. Maybe what we had was an older version?

You're not thinking of Battleship, are you?

SONAR SUB HUNT was one just like that, with no LCDs though. It was from my Dad's era, circa 50s-60s

Yep that was it. "Rather expensive at the time ($40-50) it was one of the first games with an on-board computer." Must have been a relative who got it for me, because my parents were so damn cheap we still had a black and white TV then!
