a mandolin is played a little bit like a guitar. Same string pattern as a bass, but many octaves higher, and you have eight strings (4 pairs of 2 identicle strings)

he was cranked something on one side, and moving his hand around on the other side, and music was coming out.

It was pretty sweet.
 
It really was a hurdy-gurdy. I bumped into a fellow playing one in Canterbury, England a few years back and he took it apart and showed me how it worked. It's not unlike a violin, except you turn the crank and that spins a wheel that strokes the strings.
