Rleemhui had it correctly: chisel + hammer = opened can. The original cans were made of metal that was too thick for today's can openers to open. It wasn't until thinner cans were invented could can openers be invented.

If you want to use that type of logic, a rock could open a can. A rock was never invented. Thus, does that mean the can was invented first because the can opener was not invented?

The can. In its prehistoric days, it was more commonly referred to simply as 'bushes'. It wasn't until wives were invented, that the can opener was created so women could complain to men about it being left in the open position.
