I'd imagine a letter explaining everything that happened in detail, perhaps along with the location of a place where he stashed evidence. Apparently Madolyn passed that on to Dignam

EDIT They really did a poor job with the ending IMO; too short, too quick, no explanation.

i really liked the movie as a whole, deep plot and all, but yeah, a little too loose on the ending

Ever go through the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney? You hear "dead men tell no tales". Well, this was kinda like his way of telling his tale after he died. A lot of storie use this as a plot device.

The envelope was to explain his identity and had a contact # for Wahlberg's character since he gave it to her "in case something happens to me".

It would also explain how he got access to Sullivan's apartment and knew he was the rat.
