Guys,
This may be a dumb question, and I know tons of you are probably sick of reading these type of threads, but everyone's PC is a bit different. I want to make sure a newer video card would be compatible with my setup I have now before I drop the cash. Any help would be appreciated. Essentially, I am wondering if an ATI 5000 (since I think I am limited to that chipset) series would work. If anyone wants to suggest a video card, that would be nice too. My specs of my PC are below:

Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
MB: Maximus II Formula
CPU: Intel core 2 Quad Core Q9450
Ram: 8 Gigs
Current graphics card: Radeon 4870 (512 MB version)

Thanks in advance!

Heya,

What resolution are you gaming at that the 4870 can't keep up with?

Very best,

Thanks for the quick response.

I just recently got a new samsung 24 inch monitor. It does 1920 x 1080. But i feel like the 512 memory is short changing me on setting everything on high (aa and AF)

Thanks.

5850 should get you 40% performance boost, even more when you are really VRAM limited. It will set you back $300 though.

You aren't exactly limited to 5000 series chipset, but a Radeon HD5850 (or 5870) would be a good upgrade and your best options.

Thanks for the responses guys. I apologize for the poor communication, but when I mentioned my chipset being limited, I was referring to the ATI aspect of it and not the 5000 series aspect. Regardless, now it seems I just need to do some measuring to make sure those cards fit.

I forgot to mention one important spec....my power supply is a corsair tx 750W...will this be a compatible power supply for everything in my case, and the radeon 5870? (right connectors, etc.)

Thanks in advance, and this should be the last question.

Probably. It needs two 6-pin connectors. That shouldn't be a problem.

You will only be limited if you want to go SLI; your mboard should allow any vendor if you are only planning on running a single graphics card.

Having said that, a HD5850/70 will be a nice upgrade if you going be gaming at 1920x1080 with with high AA/AF.
