Which video card would be a good upgrade from the X1900XT 512mb?

A Geforce 9600GT, 8800GT, or 8800GTS 512mb G92, or should I wait for the Geforce 9800s to come out?

My system specs are this:
Abit KN8 Ultra S939 motherboard
PC Power and Cooling 510-SLI Power Supply
Radeon X1900XT 512mb
Athlon 64 X2 4800+ S939(not overclocked, I'm not into overclocking)
2 Gigs of PC2700 Ram
Soundblaster Live! 24-bit Sound Card

How much of a boost would I get from the 8800GT? Would it run cooler than the 1900XT?

Are there any ATI cards worth considering?

I'd get no less than a 8800GT 512MB,its only $220 last i've seen ($200 if you do MIR's)

But why the upgrade? Your X1900XT should only struggle with games like Crysis and WiC and a few others, but that card is still a good card and can play most games on decwent settings at a respectable resolution.

I upgraded from a x1900xt to a 8800gt and got a noticeably huge increase in performance. Just make sure to get the 512MB version.

If you already have an x1900xt, just wait for the new lineup from nvidia and ati in the summer.

I have a 1900XTX and tried both to upgrade to 8800GTX for a month then return it and then 3 months of 8800GT before I return it, it just wasnt worth it. The only games I play that I saw a gameplay diffrence was the newer COD4 and Crysis which I finished.

If you want to feel a real diffrence and get your moneys worth hold out for 3 more months and see what the 4000 series will bring. I suppose to be 50% faster than the 3000 series and much better watt and also increase the frambuffer from 512MB

If you absolutly want to play COD4 or Crysis, buy a 8800gt or 9600gt and "try it" for a month.

I am waiting for the 4000 series.

MyLeftNut +1 (for the comment and the name!)

8800GT destroys x1950xtx

Now, even with that being shown, why do you want to upgrade? Is your card dying, just too slow in the games you play, suffering at a new/higher resolution from a new monitor, or has the upgrade bug just bitten your @$$?

If you have a real reason to upgrade right now, go with either the HD3870, 8800GT 512MB, 8800GTS 512MB, or maybe even the HD3870X2 (dual GPU card). Any of these cards should be a nice upgrade from your x1900xt.

If you are just feeling the urge to upgrade or you have a reason but it's not urgent, wait a few more months until nVidia launches the next generation of cards. At that point either get one of the 8800GT/GTS cards cheaper or else get a newer/faster/shinier 9800GT/GTS/GTX.

id say to wait or pick up a G92 card.... im more than happy with my 9600GT SLi setup tho...i just got it all running this week

but honestly you might want to look into more CPU before you get crazy with the video card... im running a Q6600 and supposedly im cpu limited....

and i know what your feeling about the upgrade bug, i just came from:
ASRock Dual939-SATA2
Thermaltake PurePower 420w
Sapphire Radeon X800GTO2 overclocked and unlocked to X850XTPE
Ahtlon64 3000+ 1.8GHz at 2.1GHz
1GB of PC3200

granted my system was a bit older it still could do what i wanted it to... Core2Quad and SLi was worht it in my opinion so id say upgrade the whole system if you can afford it

the best deal out right now is an msi 8800gt OC. It's 190 AR shipped at newegg and a few bucks cheaper at another site (microcenter maybe?). Engineer has the cheaper web site address if you're interested. Since you don't OC, that card should get you basically identical performance to 8800gts512, a very significant upgrade over your current card.

If you choose to wait, there are 3 releases scheduled for this year. Nvidia is releasing the high-end 9xxx series cards starting in mid-march and going through apr 3 (9800gx2, 9800gtx, 9800gt that I know of). These cards are nothing special, just a minor upgrade on 8800gt 512 and 8800gts 512. Figure 10-20% increase in performance over the equivalent 8800 series card, but 50% more cost. A few months from now amd is releasing r700 and rv770 cards. Based upon the specs floating around out there, these cards will probably be around 50% improvement over equivalent 3xxx series cards. This is a true "next generation" card from amd as opposed to nvidia's "refresh" for the 9xxx series. Finally, gt200 is on the horizon for nvidia, that is THEIR next generation card. I haven't seen anything reliable on that card, and it's not even a sure thing for this year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the high end card from that generation demolish everything before it.
