I'm planning on getting Acer AL2416 LCD

My current desktop has a 2.2ghz opteron (single core) & an ATI x800 GTO video card. The system is running on 2 gigs of ram.

The monitor will be primarily used for video playback and for regular office use. Though I don't have an HD-DVD or Blueray drive, I figure I need a card capable of crunching video at that resolution. Since I'm not interested in games, what's a cheap card I can get that supports video playback 1080P playback?

Your system is on AGP, I'm assuming? Perhaps a X1950 Pro AGP or the fabled HD3850 AGP that's supposedly coming would would be the absolute highest you can aspire to. However, AGP is costly and staying on that platform might be more expensive than upgrading the computer to PCI-e (it's pretty cheap nowadays, shop around) due to AGP cards and their price premium due to their rarity.
