I need a new video card, if you cant tell by my sig specs. I'm getting a new mobo so I can get an PCI-E card. I haven't been around computer stuff for a long time so when I started looking into new video cards I was amazed by all the new stuff. I would only like to spend about $180 on a new card. So I was wondering what you guys thought would be the best out there. I play games often, but I'm not some guy that sits at home all day and plays. I was thinking about the X1600XT, 6600GT, X800, and cards like that.

If you're a OCer who doesn't mind voiding warranty and risking card, X800GTO.

If not, 6800GS.

Well I'm not much of an OCer. Is that why everyone is recommending the X800GTO, to OC?

Yeah, and possibly unlock it to 16 pipes. So if you're not into OC'ing or bios flashing you might be better off with a gs - and there will be more gto's left for those who do want to mod it.

Its easy to OC, especially for ATI cards, you can download a program called ATITool and it will find the max core and memory configurations that your card can do, its pertty much dummy proof . The program is free, and an OC'ed gto will beat a GS in most games, and thats just a 12 pipe GTO.

If you really want the best performace for that price range get a GTO2 and you can unlock the 4 extra shader pipes with ATITool. It just an X850XT with a different name.

I would deffinatly recommend the GTO, I own one. My friend has pertty much the same system as me (just a faster proccesor) with a 6800gs and we get around the same frames in BF2. And i score a bit higher in 3dmark. The difference? i paid about $70 canadian less. To each their own, i guess.

Either way, enjoy whatever card you get

Edit: Also I just looked at the card in the above post and it already has the 4 extra pipes unlocked, so that would probably be the best card for you, since you don't want to OC.

Spend the extra $20 and get a 6800GS, nothing out of the box will beat it at that price range.

Not to mention you can overclock a GS and it has way more features over the X800.

wait a sec.. what are we talking about :! AGP or PCI express ! if its AGP 6800gs then its not really worth and they cost mucher more thans it brother 6800gs pcie. Anyways :
X800GT AGP = $140ish
6600GT AGP = $140ish
X800GTO AGP = $180ish
6800gs agp = i saw one but can't find the link but it was selling for $240

X800GT pic e = $130ish
6600gs pic e = $130ish
X800GTO pci e = $180ish
6800gs pci e = $200ish

Definitely an X800GTO like this link

I don't know why all the Nvidia fanboys are so hot for the 6800GS. It only has 12 pixel pipelines(versus the 16 for the X800GTO) and is only a deal if you get lucky on an overclock which you've stated you don't wanna mess with.

It basically performs as well as a 6800GT stock due to the higher clock rates, at least in PCI-E form. When they're both stock, the GS is better.

Granted, I would take the GTO if i didn't already have a 7800GT, so meh.

You can definately OC the 6800GS to fly past that X800GTO (16p).

The only GTO I would consider is the Connect3D that unlocked and overclocked like a beast.

The GTO you show is almost exactly the same as an X800XL, and yes it did give the 6800GT a run for its money. The GS stock compared to the GTO, the performance is very very close, the GS may cost a little more but will give room to overclock way past the GTO.

I have another question. You guys are saying get the Connect3D X800GTO. I would rather get the Sapphire because I've had better experience with them. Which one should I get? Also is it better to have the 256MB card over the 128MB card?

Read the reviews, the GS stomps a stock GTO and still passes a higher clocked GTO. Not to mention you could always overclock the GS and put it way out of the GTO's range.

Well, at first only the Sapphire X800GTO2s, priced at around 180-190, were reported to being able to unlock another 4 pipes (They OC'd extremely well too). The card got popular and become OOS. So newegg decides to jack the prices up to $280. Then people began getting similar results with the Connect3D X800GTOs, so that became hot. I guess after a while, the supply of 480 cores ran out (I forget the other one). The Connect3D X800GTOs were no longer unlockable. Then PowerColor releases their 16 pipe X800GTO. It doesn't OC as well as the X800GTO2, but it's cheaper and you don't have to go through the hassle of unlocking the extra 4 pipes. If you don't plan on OCing, I highly suggest getting the PowerColor X800GTO@16 pipes. If you do plan on OCing, the Sapphire X800GTO2 is the card to get.

EDIT:

I just took at the benches posted by Wreckage. Apparently, the 6800GS is killing the X800GTO (although they are only at 12 pipes). It's practically dead even with the X800XL (which is essentially the 16 pipe powercolor), which is strange because the 6800GS only has 12 pipes. So I guess the choice now is between the Sapphire GTO2 or a 6800GS.

of course the 6800gs kills a stock x800gto, the 6800gs is like a 6800gt replacement, where an x800gto is meant to compete with a regular 6800. the powercolor x800gto is basically an x800xl which was meant to compete against the 6800gt/gs and it does so. X-bit Labs basically said the two were equal. the sapphire gto2 are now probably pretty rare, and once unlocked, it's basically an x850xt...which can take on the 6800ultra.
