there were only a few you could softmod. THere's a thread on Video somewhere that explained it, but those ran out rather quickly. I think they were from Sapphire (???) and only a limited number had the right core and memory (???).

I didn't read into it much, but I wouldn't chance risking $120 on a card that MIGHT softmod

Connect3D has a GTO that unlocks, and Sapphire has a GTO2 that does.

If you just want a good card and don't want to try to unlock, I say 6800GS (which is what I'm getting, if just for SM3 support).

The GS is a very good card for its price range, especially if you get a factory overclocked model like the one offered by XFX. GS's have been shown to be extremely overclockable, and at reference speeds they perform as well as a 6800 GT. Imagine how well they could do if pushed to their full potential! :D
