What Video Card is better? nVidia Geforce? or ATI?

My Geforce4 4800SE 128 was fried after my brother ignorantly unplugged the PS/2 connector for the mouse while the power was on. Ever since he did that, the computer monitor displayed no signal. We tested it at the shop, and they said the motherboard was still fine. They tested another video card, and the computer booted up fine. So the Video card is shot. I spend $174 on this video card from newegg. I'm going to send it back and get a new one.

My question is, should I go continue and get the same card? or should I go for an ATI? Which cards are more stable? And which card is more apt for RTS 3D games, or just the most brilliant graphics? Radeon 9700? (Geforce FX is too expensive)

at the moment, ati seems to be on top

depending on your budget, try to get a radeon 9500 pro or even a 9700

Nah if you do a little shopping around you can pick one up cheaper. I just bought one for $267 which isn't exactly cheap but that's a little better then what they used to go for :)

Let me rephrase. I'm assuming that could be the problem. We have no proof tha's what caused it. All I know is that a couple days later the video card doesn't work, and even the shop said. The only thing I can think of is that he unplugged the PS/2. So, perhaps it could be just a bad video card.

yeah that's a good price, but try to find a 9700 non-pro as it's a much better value. you should be able to get one for ~210.

Man that musta been a freak accident frying your video card by unpluging a ps/2 mouse. I unplug PS/2 keyboards + mice all the time while the system is on and have yet to encounter a problem.

I agree completely. I seriously doubt that caused a problem with the card. In fact, I'd want to test it (the card) in another pc before I wrote it off.

As to this thread's actual topic, I'd get an ATI card if I were in the market right now. (My choice: 9500 Pro.) All the head-to-head reviews I've read give the performance edge to ATI. And ATI seems to have overcome some of the driver problems they had in the past.

Mind you, this recommendation comes from a guy whose 3 systems equipped with nvidia-based (Gainward) cards.

Yep, mine is a Gainward too. I didn't try testing the video card in another system, but I did try taking my Geforce3 off my old system and tried it on the new system. System boots fine with that one. But once I put the Geforce 4 4800SE back in, it doesn't work.

So you think I really ought to go ahead and try placing the Geforce 4 in another system? I suppose that if it works, then we know that it must be something to do with the motherboard recognizing that particular card.

Who knows...
