my friend got a new hp from free because she had to send her old one in like 4 times in for repair. it has a q6600 processor which I read is great but a rv530xt video card. I think that is from the x1600 series but which one and is it any good for gaming? I told her she'll prob have to upgrade it to play games like UT3.

The RV530 is the X1600. It's probably the X1600 XT as I don't think there is a actually a chip called RV530XT.

The X1600 isn't *too* bad...I've been using it (actually an X1600 Pro..slower) to play Counter-Strike:Source and Half-Life2 for quite a while and it works fine.

Not sure how it'd run on UT3...but I'd guess you'd have to lower the resolution to around 1024x768 to make it playable... (at a guess)

Look at this benchmark of various video cards in UT3 at 1600x1200 (also benchmarked at 1024x768 on a previous page). The x1650xt (which is a good step above the x1600xt, IIRC) struggles at this resolution -- 30fps in a shooter is not typically very fun.

Sounds like a good system otherwise, make sure it has 2GB of DDR2 and then toss in an 8800gt/gts/3870/whatever mid-high level new generation card you like and away you go.

Well no one in their right mind would even think of running at 1600x1200 with a X1600/X1650 of any flavour... but at 1024x768 it seems to run ok...just under 60fps..
