What video card for the computer artist - not the computer gamer?

Recomendations?

I have an Annihilator Pro lying around which i could use for the machine, but i'm wondering if it is worth it to fork out the dough for a brand new card.

Is there a noticeable difference in Photoshop with a video card that has 64 megs and a video card with 32 megs?

The computer will be used 99.9% exclusively for Photoshop.

I'm not the most knowledgable person, when it comes to video cards but, if you do decide to get a new video card... consider Matrox Millenium G450... since it is one of the best 2D, DDR basedcards out there rite now...

Ok its time to be realistic, first of all 2D is maxed out, so the matrox millenium will not give more than a .0001% performance increase. Second of all, Since 2D is maxed out, one must look where the real bottle neck is, its system memmory. The more memmory the faster the modifications.

Just about any 2D card will do just fine.. keep the Anihalater pro, and spend that extra money on more RAM.

Get the Matrox.

Get dual monitors to take full advantage of the Matrox.

Get more RAM now that prices are down.

Finally, top it off with a Promise FastTrak100 RAID controller card and a couple of 7200 rpm HDD's to boot.

Then you're ready to rock 'n' roll!

another go for the Matrox, difference wont be big, but if used 99% for Photoshop, you WILL notice a difference. Stick some more ram in the box too......

A very high quality monitor can make the crappyest of video cards look good.
But a combo of high quality video card/monitor is the best.

Until I get her new machine finished, with its Matrox G400, my wife is doing lots of graphics work with a Matrox G200 driving a Sony F500R monitor, and she gets excellent detail even at high resolutions. So, depending on what you want to spend, even a G200, which is very cheap these days, would do well.
