What video card do you suggest for around $150.00?

I'm using a Voodoo3 3000AGP at the moment. I just got my new system complete and was wondering what kind of improvements I would see from a new card(the voodoo3 I took from my old comp).

Abit KT7
Duron 650@800
p133 128mb Crucial
ALPHA 6035
Quantum 15gig Fireball
48x CDrom
SB Live! Value
Antec sx1030

I would recommend the Matrox G400.

This will get you the best visual quality of any video card, but slower frame speeds in games like Q3A and UT. The games are still playable, though.

A GeForce 2 MX. Better for gaming than the G400, 2d isn't as good though. I had a V3 3k in my 2nd system (Cel 366@583) and upgraded to a Prophet 2 MX. My 3dmark score went from 1703(V3) to 3768(MX). Framerates nearly doubled... Q3 in Normal-10x7x16bit went from 20-40 with the V3 to 40-70 with the MX. You should see more of an increase due to your Duron over my ol' skool celly.

If you wanna go even cheaper and still get good performance pick up 32mb TNT2 Ultra card...great performance and can probably be bought for around $100 now.

GeForce II MX would be my first choice...

But then again, I personally think my Voodoo3 is still adequate for my needs. 🙂

Definatley a Geforce2 MX. I have one, and it runs great. I'd recommend only to buy it either for Guillemont (Hercules) or ASUS. I have the Guillemont one and I can run it overclocked to the max no problem.

A V3 3000 is still pretty playable as long as you keep to 1024x768 and below. A G400 won't buy you much, other than features that you can't *really* use except in lower resolutions(32bit color, EMBM, large textures, etc). 2D is arguably better on the G400 MAX, but the V3 isn't shabby either compared to others like ATI and nvidia. If you only have $150, I suggest you buy some time now, save up more, and get a better card in the future. $150 won't get you much better performance than a V3 3000.

I was thinking of upgrading my V3 3K also, but have decided to wait for awhile. It still works great. If the upgrade bug has you convinced you have to get something, spend another $20 and get one of these

Definitely a geforce 2 mx. I have been researching one for my second system and it has been my number 1 choice for a while

I agree with the others. Hang on to your V3 a while, O/C it if you want a bit more speed. I'm waiting to see what 3dfx has up its sleeve before I buy any new board, esp. for T&L support.

Could you pull a few bucks more and get Untamo's Geforce 2 GTS for 186 shipped? Its a great deal, and one big step up in performance!

The difference between a Voodoo3 and an Geforce 2 MX is phenomenal. Get a hercules OEM one as it's overclocking results are superb.
