Hi friends,
I am building a backup PC. It's regular use will be for general web surfing, working with Windows Office programs, listening to music and watching Youtube video. I have a similar build that I use exclusively for online Zoom classes for teaching yoga. For the online instruction I use a Sony A5100 Mirrorless camera at HD 1080 connected to the PC via ElGato Cam Link 4k.
I live in Thailand and am buying parts here.
These I are the components I already have for the backup build:
AsRock B450 Gaming ITX AC
AMD Ryzen 5 3500 3.6GHz
Corsair DDR4 2x8 GB 2400
Corsair SF450 SFX PSU
Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX case
Western Digital Black NVMe SSD 250GB

I am using Windows 10.

The current PC I am using for my online classes has the same components plus a:
Gigabyte RX5500 XT OC 4GB video card that when purchased a year ago cost about US$ 188. If I can find a similar card here now it will run about $900.

I need a to get a VGA card for the backup build and can't afford to spend so much.
What level of card do you think I can get by with?
Here are a few cards available here at an affordable price for me:
Gigabyte GT 710 2GB DDR3 64 Bit $64
MSI GT730 N730K-2GD3H/LP 2GB DDR3 (fanless) $97
Gigabyte GT 1030 2GB DDR4 64 Bit $110
GIGABYTE GTX1050 Ti G1 Gaming 4GB RGB D5 $225

Here are links to two local online sellers. You can view in English as well as Thai. Prices listed are in Thai Baht. Exchange rate is about 1US$ to 31 Thai Baht.

Any thoughts or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
I'm really not sure what video card I need for good performance for my application.

Thank you,
Justin Herold

You can get by with a GT710 no problem. Two of my secondary PCs* run those and I have no issues with them. The only GT710 limitation is if you're using a 4K monitor in which case it'll be limited to 30Hz, since the GT710 only support HDMI 1.4. However, since you specifically mention youtube, I'd spend a bit more and go with the GT1030, as it has full VP9 hardware accelerated decoding.

The GTX1050 doesn't make sense for desktop work, since the only improvement from the 1030 is 4K Netflix support, and it's over twice as expensive.

That's about it really.

*one is even limited to a PCIe 2.0 x1 interface. You don't notice it unless you know it's there.

Thanks for your input.
Do you think the GT 1030 will be able to handle my Zoom classes if I need to use this build for that?

I don't think there'd be any issues doing that. Of course it doesn't have unlimited processing power (only 384 shaders), so it might be taxed by some of the more fancy features. But basic usage should be fine.

Without any gaming the obvious choice is four 3090’s in sli

The serious answer is I agree with the above 750-ish or better depending how much you want to spend and how much effort you want to put into it.
For someone like you I say go “good enough” but not perfect, then get the perfect card when the market ultimately settles.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm really hoping I won't have to use this as a backup. I will look for a suitable card for now and when things get more realistic with VGA I can try for an upgrade.

One more question. I think:rolleyes:
I have these two brand choices for the 1030, both are the same price.
ASUS GT 1030 PH OC edition 2GB
Gigabyte GT1030/2Gb DDR4 Low Profile D4 2G

Is one superior over the other?

I have had two or three ASUS cards and they all were a little on the loud side but ran without failure.
When I say loud the fans ran aggressively but not excessively loud.
I agree with the above they will be equal to each other. Get whichever one you perfer.

Well, technically, you can force YT to output H264 video by using a browser plugin. And still be fine with Kepler, for 1080p at least.

If you can, get one with the DDR5 memory.

The Asus I noted has DDR5. The Gigabyte DDR4.
So I can go with the Asus.

Thanks for the advice.
