What video card are you using with the Dell 2001FP?

Hi gang,

I'm contemplating getting the Dell 16ms monitor as listed above. What video card are you guys using with this? The specs on the monitor look great, but the 1600x1200 worries me. I understand that for this monitor to look the best, you have to play games in 1600x1200 and that usually requires a pretty serious video card. What's the minimum card you can use with this monitor?

Are there any 19" monitor with 16ms response times? The resolution requirements on those must be a little lower, thus allowing a little slower video card.

Thanks!
Aaron

Nobody on this board using this monitor? Did I say something wrong? Did I not ask the question right?

you can use any card with the dell 2001fp. dont worry about the monitor resolution. every good monitor has a high default resolution. just cuz it looks best on that resolution doesnt mean it'll suck. anyways, by having your resolution set at 1600x1200, you dont have to play your games at that res. just change the in game resolution to something lower. the same goes for crt monitors.

Thanks. I guess that's what I needed to know. I didn't want the games I play at 1280x1024 to look crappy on the monitor.

Does that mean, however, I should put the Windows 2D res. to 1600x1200 so it looks the best?

Yes, always set Windows to the native resolution of your LCD screen for the sharpest picture. Unless the text is too small for you to read, but this depends on your eyes :)

I hope 1600x1200 looks a little bigger on the Dell than it does on my IBM 21" CRT. :)

Thanks again, guys, for taking the time to answer.

I have the 1901FP DELL LCD monitor. It looks best at native resolution which in my case is 1280 X 1024.

I use it with a 4 years old GF2 card and quality is excellent.

I have a Sharp 19" with the same 16 ms screen used in the Dell. I got it for $450.

Hey amheck,

i have the viewsonic 201 which as far as i know uses the same panel as the Dell,

it is a great monitor but the difference in quality (like with ANY TFT) is noticable when using resolutions not native to the tft (in this case 1600x1200). I'm running a 6800GT and i try to run all games at 1600x1200 even if i have to sacrifice AA/AF

if i were you keep this in mind since a 19" tft with 1280x1024 will look much better at its native res. Also there are 12ms models from BenQ and a few other manufacturers which are really amazing. The difference from 12ms to 16ms is noticable since they have a much improved gray-to-gray response (at least thats the term i think :) ) so even worst case response times are better.

If i were you aim for something like the 19" 12ms if you cant reliably play most games at 1600x1200. imho you'll need a 6800 or x800 card to do that with the latest games

I've had the 2001FP for about @ 6 months or so... it's been fine w/ the gainward 4-4400... with desktop at 1600x1200, and running biggest size fonts option. Games I play: Links 2003, Total Annihilation, some Quake 3, and now Doom3.

Last night I installed BFG 6800Gt nVidia vid card... haven't done any benchmarks yet.

Monitor is the best I've ever had...and my old monitor is an Eizo-Nanao TXCRS 17" ( mod # may be incorrect)...which cost me @ $1,000. in @ 1994...

Ah...Nanao...brings back old memories. I remember when Nanao was one of the best CRT monitors back in the day. I owned one back in the mid-90's, and it was "high-end" for its day, as it only had BNC terminals on the back (i.e., no VGA-to-VGA cable), plus it had all kinds of screen adjustment controls, which was unheard of--if not widespread--back in the 90's.

Back on topic, though--I'm using a 9800 Pro w/ my 2001fp at 1600x1200 and the picture looks great!

Newbie question here--does refresh rate really matter/make a difference on LCD displays? I ask because the refresh rate at 1600x1200 with my 9800 Pro/2001fp setup (using DVI output from video card to DVI input on LCD) is set/fixed at 60 Hz; according to the Dell documentation for the 2001fp, 60 Hz is the max refresh rate at that resolution. Like I said, the output looks great; however...is 60 Hz acceptable at that resolution on an LCD display, in general?

toneman, since you are connected through DVI, refresh rate as far as i know does not really come into play any more.

in any case its really the response time of the panel which matters

Toneman...

Come over to my house right now... watch my son and me play Doom3, at 1600x1200, game at max quality settings, at 48 FPS... you'll "see" why a "60" refresh rate doesn't matter on my Dell 2001FP...

The "wow" factor is beyond belief... :)

MY specs are listed below in my signature. Short and dirty... I have a 9800 Pro and the 2100FP monitor and while running HALO at 16x12 resolution it CHOKES my 9800 Pro. I would not recommend 16x12 on a 9800 Pro for any high fps games like HALO and Doom 3 if you want HIGH or ULTRA quality.
