What version of Linux should I install on my laptop?

So I'm going to take another shot at tinkering with Linux and I need suggestions on which version to install. I use it mostly for surfing the net, watching videos (DVDs, filecabi.net, break.com, etc.), and connecting to my work's VPN/remote desktop. I have no real experience with Linux, beyond a semester of networking in college that was done on servers running Red Hat. The laptop is running a Sempron 2800+ with 768 megs of RAM.
