hey i was just wondering what most people in these forums use as a linux distro.

Im currently using ubuntu and i like it alot.

the only other ones ive tried are just other versions of ubuntu (xubuntu, kubuntu, mint)

So let me know what u use and why u like it.

i wanna try something else and ill probably use it for a week or 2 until Hardy Herron comes out

also im using a 8 series video card so whatever u recommend let me know if ill be able to install it.

I had to use an alternate Cd for ubuntu and could not install mint on my new computer.

I've used: Fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandrivia, SuSE, Redhat, Gentoo, Arch-Linux, and Slackware

Each distro has something interesting to offer.

Current using Ubuntu Server 7.10. Installed and configured it in 20 minutes--and that's with installing the software manually (well, using apt-get) for everything.

Windows Home Server took 2 hours... Ugh.

I use Ubuntu on my laptop (Xubuntu Dapper, actually). I like it because it runs like a snap on 128mb of RAM. Windows 2000 and XP were unusuable with AV and all updates - I timed one of them (don't remember if it was XP or 2000), from power on to having a Firefox window open took 10 minutes. With Xubuntu, fully updated, it takes about 2 minutes. I tried Gutsy and Feisty, and even tried the Hardy Beta, but they are all noticeable slower than Dapper. I'm hoping maybe Hardy Final will have some optimizations to reduce the ram footprint, but I'm not counting on it.

I also think Xubuntu's look is WAY better than Ubuntu. It's seems very clean and tidy, which I like (probably not an issue with most people, but I'm the kinda of guy that likes to keep zero icons on his desktop, neat and tidy). Also, it's blue. Not brown/orange.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I'm very much looking forward to the release of 8.04 Hardy Heron, and will install it when it is available, in just a few days.

i've used slackware back in 1999 to 2001 and i loved it. learned a lot about how linux works and loved it. it took my 550mhz 5 hours to compile a new kernel. then i learned about slackpacks and was blown away.

one of these days i will go back.

in my opinion xfree86 isn't quite there yet.

I'm using ubuntu right now, but am a little annoyed with it. I think I'm going to try PCLinuxOS on my desktop and go with mythbuntu for my mythbox. Both have issues right now with the upgrade.

Ubuntu 7.10 on desktop, Ubuntu 8.03 beta on Notebook (only Ubuntu that supports sound on my P105 notebook). Primary for both cases.

Dual boot to Vista Business on notebook, XP Pro on desktop for compatibility purposes.

Gentoo - I like portage. If my hard disk died or something and I had to start fresh I might go with Debian, but this Gentoo install has served me well since '03.

Running Kubuntu on my laptop currently, but I'm always playing with different OSes on there.

My laptop is running SLED 10.1. (using it now)

I'm going to be upgrading to whatever version of SLED comes out next. I had to install nVidia drivers for 3D support, tweak the codecs for WMA playback and AVI support, and use an ndiswrapper to get my Dell 1390 wireless card to work (brocade driver). It was time consuming to get it just right, but worth it....it's a solid OS.

Ubuntu 8.04 RC1 as of this moment. I tend to stick with the 32 bit versions due to compatibility issues that still haunt 64 bit Ubuntu.
