What used car would you buy for under 10k?

Looking for the best fuel econ/insurance for a car. You can also include the V6 cars if they are cheap to insure.

Looking for stuff reliable and please chime in if you are a previous owner.

Maxima, Camry, Accord, Altima, even a Civic....

You gotta do the research and make sure your getting what you pay for. Like make sure it does just "test drive" good, but actually drives good for a long time. cheack out the carfax history. you can get that for about 15 bucks, i believe.
If you are buying through a dealer, make sure it has a 30 day or something no hassle return guarantee.

99-00 civic si - cheap pocket rocket
94-01 integra gsr - slightly faster and expensive.

both these cars are very fuel efficient under 5k rpm. over 5k rpm is another story. 😉

Then why recommend a Honda? A girl at school has had her accord in the shop 3 times this month but insists Honda's are more reliable than any other car

Honda's are extremely reliable. 170k on a car with little maintnance is called reliability.

For reliability, I would suggest an older-model Ford or a Honda.

A ford? Can you say transmission failure?

That's funny because I used to own a '86 Ford Taurus that made it to near 200K miles with almost nothing more than regular maintenence and a new paint job.

Few cars I've rented that are real late-model used car values (all 4 cylinders):

2003 Mitsubishi Galant - Great basic transportation, Japanese (car) reliaibility.
2002 Nissan Altima - Might not meet your budget, I was impressed with the car.
2004 Chevy Cavalier - Dirt cheap, decent to drive, great powertrain. Late model so reliability should be decent.

Can't recommend Honda or Toyota on that budget, their resale value is too strong to be considered a good value.

They don't all have trans problems, i was mostly refering to the trucks and the escort, those are the only ones i've had any experience with

for 10K you can get an 03' Ford Focus with less than 40K miles on it..... and thats from Carmax.... which I'm sure a little bit of looking will beat.
