What UPS should I get for a 420W computer running with an XP2000+, two 120GB raided HDD, and a 21 inch monitor?

For the kind of power you're draining, I'd say a higher end Back-UPS Pro, with a rating of at least 1000VA(they jump from 650VA to 1000, with 650 being too small).

I run a 500va trippe lite (IBM branded) on a 431w p/s, 21" monitor, 3 hard drives, xp 1800@1725mhz, dvd, cdrw, etc and a boatload of fans (2 hd coolers, a 120, a 92, 3 80s, slot cooler, etc) and a cable modem. never ran it for more than 4 or 5 minutes before i shut it down, i imagine im pushing it. if you just need it to shut down your pc it should be plenty. if you want to continue playing UT you need something bigger 🙂

if it does run out of juice it will just shut down, as if the power went out.

Bruno, overloading a UPS isn't really a good idea. I've seen one smoke that was slightly overloaded, and while it's possible it was the fault of a bad UPS in the first place, I'm willing to bet it was the overload. It could work, but for the cost of a UPS that would have a remote chance of being powerful enough, it's not nessisarily a wise risk.😱
