and I have plans to add an additional HDD and upgrade to a quad core cpu, could anybody help me?

and what is the "VA" means after each value in the UPS, like 1000va, 625va?

and is there really a difference between DDR2 800, and 1066?

VA stands for Volt-Amps....in DC power VA and wattage will be the same...in AC power they aren't always (due to the way a computer power supply uses the power). The relationship between VA (apparent power) and Watts (actual power) is called Power Factor.

look here

Usually the Watts a UPS is rated for are about 60% less than the VA rating.

As for what type of UPS you need...we would need to know your entire setup...

As for the RAM, that would depend on whether or not you want to overclock. If you don't plan to, the DDR2 800 is fine, if you do..it depends on how much you want to overclock as to whether or not you want the 1600...which is itself overclocked by the factory

the APC page is not very good... it offered me 3 ups... a 550 VA one that was listed as being 40% used by my selection... and two for over 1000$ each showing me using 4%...

I also want advice on ups... i really only want to power a tower... one quad core Q9400 and one server (low power X2 and 5 HDDs) during power spikes.
mmm... i should probably research opensolaris UPS drivers for ones that provide info to the computer, id like the server to auto turn off before losing power...

Is there a company that makes UPS that can be run in complete silence? I would rather have unexpected power failure then be woken up in the middle of the night due to shrill beeping.

Technically it is impossible to have a completely silent UPS! Most UPSs using a high speed switching electronics that create high frequency noise (most of it is above human hearing range) but some of it can be audible.

I would check here for information on UPS systems, especially larger UPS systems that are used in data centers. Certainly, noise is of concern there, as well, so you would be wise to consult with what the data center professionals use to select UPS systems. http://www.datacenterfix.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4

A really nice bang for the buck is the CyberPower Intelligent LCD Series GreenPower UPS CP1350AVRLCD at Newegg for $128 shipped using the promo code EMCKJKC75 (only 64 hours left as of this post).

I got the 900W version not long ago for $150 shipped.

Wish I'd have known about this deal. Just had a 1000VA APC UPS battery go bad and I bought this Cyberpower 1350VA unit as a replacement. Seems to have good build quality and takes up less space than my old APC unit.
