What update NOT to install to avoid Windows 10

I have two machines. Both Windows 7 Pro 64. I want the game rig to have Windows 10 for DX12 features. I am not ready to install Windows 10 on my daily machine.

WHAT UPDATE DO WE NOT WANT???

Or, if it downloads that update, simply don't tell it to actually install Win10.

It will not force win10 on you. You have to initiate the install yourself.

Yeah, early adoption within a couple of days of launch is always smart.

If you have the drivers and have done some basic research on your hardware and its all clear no reason not to go for 10.

It's all down to your hardware etc,personally my Win10 went smooth in fact both of my Win10 upgrades did with different hardware on each,yes one is my gaming rig and it installed all possible drivers.

I have thrown my games at Win10 and software,guess what?..All running great so yes it CAN be smart to upgrade right away.
Very impressed with installation and how polished Win10 is,regardless of the OS you use there will always be some form of updates or fixes until EOL of the OS in question,that goes for Win7 to.

I can say I think Win10 is in very solid form at the moment,definitely stable enough for general use and release as a new OS.
Side note upgrading right a way you get improved security and features over Win7 so yes can be a very smart move .

No games will support DirectX 12 until later this fall at the earliest. Only games I'm aware of currently are Fable Legends and King of WuShu.

I'd wait another 5-6 months or so before making the switch. All the kinks (if there are any) will be more or less worked out by then. You've got 1 year to do the free ugprade as well. I'm planning on waiting 1 year on my Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines. I built a new computer for Windows 10 exclusively, however.

Sure, "Smart" now with the benefit of hindsight. Not so much smart, as lucky, and that was exactly the kind of worthless anecdote I was referring in my last post. The best policy as always to wait a bit.

As for the security and features, Windows 7 doesn't have any glaring vulnerabilities to start with, and while 10 brings with it some new features, it removes some significant ones as well. For many people, there are good reasons not to switch, even if one ignores the inherent risks of early adoption. It depends entirely on the user, and for me choosing between 7 and 10 certainly feels less clear-cut than choosing between XP and 7.

Forced updates still represent a huge, glaring regression in my eyes, the only real "deal breaker", and now that I've had a fair bit of time to mess around with the final OS and the show/hide tool, I can see that they're going to be every bit as problematic for me in practice, as they were in theory.

I can also see from the perspective of someone who has an HTPC or something and used Media Centre (as I once did with an HDHomerun) why they might not want to switch. They could go to the trouble of moving to windows 10 and finding some new software to replace MC, or they could just stay put with the software they're already perfectly happy with for another 4+ years.

Just because your set of priorities make Windows 10 a no-brainer for you, doesn't mean it'll be the same for everyone else. That's the point I would put to escrow and everyone else who claims there is "no reason not to" take up Windows 10.

Risks are so minimal,drivers are out for main hardware and it can use Win8/8.1 in a few cases,stability well not had a single crash yet,remember Win10 has been in testing phase for quite awhile now,not last week or last month but quite a long time.
I would also say risks is virtually zero if you have everything backed up and nowadays there is no reason not too.

Again Win7 is far from perfect and on its way to EOL,don't kid yourself its better on security on 8 or 10 because that point has already be proved by Microsoft that 7 is not as secure,sure you can wait up to a year to upgrade to Win10 but why wait when it's very stable.

I agree, I've had no trouble on 4 systems upgrading from 8 to 10. The change from 7 to 10 is more drastic with drivers being incompatible so yes there will be some problems there. For what it's worth I've never had an update for windows break anything. I've had some problems with video card drivers in the past though but that's hardly the fault of the OS.

I had to wipe out my game rig OS and reinstall 7. No updates, just the 20 min simple instal. I then used the Microsoft tool to do the upgrade and it went smooth. The only issue I am having is a popup from the Action Center keeps showing that I have no virus scanner. Shows up in the lower right hand corner. It's so annoying. It will show for not even a split second then it disappears before I get a chance to click on it.

My install of Win 7 was relatively new, <4 months old, so my upgrade to 10 on my gaming rig (the one I'm on now) went relatively smoothly. Yeah if you have your Source / Origin drive on a second hard drive for instance there is no fear of having to roll back if any of your games have some incompatibilities with Windows 10.

The benchmarks I've seen also show that Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 have a slight performance advantage when compared to these brand new Windows 10 Direct X 12 drivers from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA.

You also have to remember drivers on Win10 are not even a week old officially,how long have drivers been made for Win7,8,8.1,we are talking years,so any slight advantage in performance if any will change in time.


I would like to see performance benchmarks after say six months to a year on Win10.

Early adoption is never smart, and it's not like you don't have an entire year to take advantage of the free upgrade. Of course you'll probably go on to recite your cute little personal anecdote of how you just switched to Windows 10 and it all went fine, but that doesn't change the fact that your chances of running into issues are greatly elevated if you rush into a piece of software that's only just been properly released. "New release" issues don't always manifest themselves on the very first day, and that applies to hardware and software equally. I'll tell you what there's no reason not to do, and that's wait a few months for the OS to mature so that any remaining bugs can be ironed out. That would be the intelligent thing to do.

"Eventually" being the operative word here, extended support for Windows 7 ends more than four years from now. That's a very long time, and if you don't particularly like Windows 10, why would you rush? because someone on the internet told you Windows 7 was "creaky"?

What software that has just been released? Most people use the same old apps that work in 7, work in 8.1, and will work in 10? Or soundcards? Who uses them? Your fault for going with a manufacturer that doesn't have Day 1 drivers with proper support.

Apps in terms of software not the OS. And Windows 7/8 era hardware is just that, old. Especially sound cards which are just as popular as Windows Phones. How many consumers off the shelf have sound cards? Beyond zero?

To be fair, driver support is down to the manufacturer of the hardware in question,not the OS fault,I remember the huge fiasco with Vista and all those lazy companies that took awhile to get drivers out,for example I had a Canon printer and they had drivers out on day one of Vista,HP on the other hand took awhile.

End of the day you can't blame it all on the OS and that goes for any OS with regards to drivers.

Now if you want to talk crappy sound driver support,Creative Labs springs to mind.

Software wise,again you know how much software is out there ?..Companies will release newer versions like they have always done with Windows over the decades,I'll give you a basic example , a few anti-virus programs have already been updated to have full Win10 support,alll my software works fine and I've some old stuff installed,again it's down to the manufacturer of the software company,you can't ask Microsoft to make it all 100% compatible because that is asking too much,it's always been this way,I had to upgrade some of my software for Vista and Win7 etc...


Btw nobody is saying(sound card wise) they are not unimportant, but vent your anger out on the company that makes your card,heard of customer support for the hardware in question.

Little tip,I ditched companies with crappy customer/driver support years ago,best move I made.

You seem to take my previous post personal,it was a statement in general for all.

Btw my brother upgraded to Win10 last night from Win7, he had no issues and his laptop is an old one that he uses for work etc,he seems to like 10.

As to Android I also have Android tablet and smartphone,I prefer them to Windows (in those areas)but for other reasons that I won't bore you with,however more choices for the consumer is not a bad thing.

I'll say IMHO that Win10 is one of the better polished Operating Systems for a new release of Windows OS.

Third party software is another thing that I did not bring up. However, that is yet another reason not to rush into a new OS. It can sometimes take a while for third parties to catch up, which you seem to be saying in that last rambling paragraph. Is that Microsoft's fault? No. Did I ever say it was Microsoft's fault? No. Does any of that detract in any way from my argument? No.

I suggest you remain polite and don't start any personal attacks on ANY members here unless you want a nice long vacation by the mods here,no need to be rude or offensive,manners are free last time I checked.
