What type of speed increase could I expect?

I currently have a system with a XP-M 2500+ OC'ed to 2200MHz, which I believe is what the XP 3200+ runs at. I am thinking about buying a new mobo/CPU with Xmas money. My budget limits me to 754-pin A64's.

My question is what type preformance increase, if any, can I expect jumping from an XP-M 2500+ running at 3200+ speed on an Nforce2 mobo to an A64 3200+ on an Nforce3 mobo? This system would mainly be used for gaming.

2.5-2.6 on air...has a lot of variables though as not all chips have the same OCing potential...also depends on the PSU(as I found out), mobo and memory...

Not terribly much, ~10%-25%.

The s754 A64s are good value and great CPUs.
However, I don't think you have any real reason to upgrade CPU/MB until the 64-bit revolution is over us.
Neither OC'ing nor minor CPU upgrades, does anything to alleviate insufficient gaming performance. Even if you were on a non-OC 2500+, that's not were you should primarily go looking for real improvements.

VIDEOCARD!

What videocard do you have?
If you already have a great videocard, and for some mysterious reason still feel gaming performance is lacking on your 2.2GHz XP-M, then by all means, get a A64. But it doesn't sound like good advice to me.
I'd sooner wonder if you got eveything right when OC...

(complication to consider: PCIe vs. AGP. My suggestion is simply to go with AGP anyway. Either gamble on trying to get a MB that features an AGP port, when it's time to upgrade MB. Or resign yourself to that the videocard should be upgraded frequently anyway.
Also, a s754 A64 now would have been wasted without a good video. And that would have to be AGP now, anyway.)

Just trying to think of things that might give a bit more performance to an older system.

Also, the mobile 2400+'s are great overclockers... for about $100 you could get another 150-200 MHz... not a killer deal, but if you are trying to wait as long as you can before upgrading... plus, since your 2500+ is a great overclocker, you might be able to sell it for as much or more than the 2400+ you'd buy! I currently have a 2400+ (mobile) that I got from NewEgg last week and it's running 2400MHz @ 1.625 and running pretty cool!

A friend of mine also just picked up one of these 2400+'s for his Shuttle box and also got a GeForce 6600GT (AGP)... says he CANNOT believe the performance difference from his 2500+ (stock) and his GeForce 5700.

My 2500+ is a mobile one and is OC'ed to 2200MHz, which is 11x200. I might be able to push it to 11.5x200 or even 12x200, but it has been running stable at 11x200 for a couple months now with good air cooling and at stock voltage, so not going to push it any farther to only get a bit more out of it. I do have 2 sticks of Hyper-X 512MB in duel channel mode and they run fine.

I think I might agree with the poster who said my video card might be a better spot to upgrade. I do have a 5700 w/256MB and the 2 cards I am eyeing are the ATI 9800Pro or the Nvidia 6600GT AGP. They both run about $225 or so. I think an upgrade along that path would give me more of a noticable preformance difference than upgrading my CPU/mobo. Plus I think I will be getting a Dell 2001FP monitor for Xmas, so will need a good card that can handle 1600x1200 without too much trouble.

I too am running a 2500+ oc'd to 3200+ at 11x200 . I am using a fx5900 128mb gpu. I am thinking of upgrading to a 6600 GT AGP8x as well instead of cpu/mobo change. Only thing is, newegg is out of stock on the xfx brand.

i got 2x performance going from pny5600u(that they sent me when i warrantied my ti4200) to bgf6800oc, kept my 2500m@2.4 on a xp333... vid card is a better investment imho...

I dont get it the sckt 939's and a good ocing board are not that far off of a sckt 754 with a good ocing board...Get the 939 for the upgradeability later to a faster chip perhaps....The 939s have dual cxhannel memory which can make 2-5% difference depending on who you are talking tio...It must be pretty good though since a 2ghz 3200+ 939 beats the 2.2ghz 3200+ 754 in a lot of apps in reviews I saw. It makes up for a 200mhz loss in speed....

Get a new videocard if you are primarily concerned about gaming. That 5700 card can't even run Half-Life 2 in DX9.0 mode.

See if you can pick up 6800GT or at least 6600AGP. Then in 2 years 64-bit, dual-core and PCIe videocard.

I went from an XP 2500+ OC to a 3200+ to an A64 3000+ oc to 2.4 and saw a dramatic increase in load times and in game performance. I used the same 9800 pro oc to 400/350 on both setups.
