I prefer speakers, but often get stuck using headphones or IEMs so others don't have to put up with it. I know a lot of people that prefer headphones or IEMs above anything else, though. Other than for isolation and the courtesy of others, I just don't see why.

I listen to everything on my headphones. I have a pair of speakers but they suck in comparison.

Actually, now when I sit at my computer I put my headphones on whether I'm listening to anything or not.

Hah, I got into the same habit. Yesterday, I realized in the middle of listening to music on my speakers that I had my headphones on, with nothing playing on them. :\

high quality 2.1 speakers.

I don't particularly care for surround sound.

I use earbuds at work, but that's just to be courteous to my cubicle neighbors. I listen to my ipod on the subway and when I get to work, I'll plug my ipod earbuds into my netbook.

Electrostats because they're so spooky real sounding. I'll never go back to distortion boxes every again.

Holy expensive Batman. I guess if you're already looking at spending multiple thousands of dollars on a speaker setup it's not bad, but man. If they had something like a $300 set that I could preview I'd be intrigued.

Depends on the type of music. You can't beat a good pair of speakers/sub for the oomph that they produce. But it's hard to beat a good set of headphones/earphones for their imaging, detail, and instrument separation, especially with a really detailed pair of phones like the Etymotic ER4 :)
So if I want to get immersed in my music, I'll listen to earphones. If I wanna get pumped up, speakers all the way.

I disagree. You don't get the "band playing in my living room" kind of imaging and depth. Earphones are "band playing in my head". The front to back stage is completely gone.

Speakers.

Usually set my receiver down to 2.1 as my rears are somewhat crummy (sony 2 ways.) However, if it's a 5.1 audio (example: porcupine tree dvds), then I'll run in dts or dd5.1 mode...

It's my house, my home theater is in the basement, so I listen as loud as my ears can tolerate usually...

The vast majority of the time I use headphones. Sennheiser HD595s work pretty well.

If I feel the need for it to be heard by others, I have some Klipsch 2.1 THX speakers for that.
