What type of screen did the Sega GameGear have?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a LCD. But I'm not sure it was a compact CRT. but a CRT would explain it's battery life of about 2 seconds.

just curious

It was a 160x146 pixel max res back-lit LCD screen.

EDIT: Oh, and the battery life being so low was because of it being back lit. Which is the reason why Nintendo's GameBoys have never had back lit screens.

It was a backlit LCD.
Why would you think it was a CRT?

If you look at it from an angle you can't see it very well and if you watch carefully you can see some blurring if there are fast moving objects, both of which are properties an LCD has and a CRT does not.

"CRTs are ALWAYS big."

which would explain at least partly why that thing was soooo huge..

I don't know, though which it was, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was either..

Hey, CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube. Thats the thing they use in TVs and monitors. AS in, havent you ever seen one of those little, hand held, portable TVs? It was definately a small CRT. That is why the Game Gear is so damn thick. It has a CRT stuffed in there! Also, if you press on the screen, you don't see the rainbow colors that show on an LCD when you press on it.

Why will some of you not accept the fact that it is an LCD? I was not guessing SilentBob, I am stating fact. I have one right here next to me, and I've looked it up just to make sure. If you take into account that the cartridge slot is right behind the screen, it isn't anywhere near thick enough to house a CRT.

EDIT: And as for why it doesn't turn rainbow when you press on it. That is because there is a rather thick plastic cover over the front of it. Btw, its less than an inch thick where the screen is.

I got a handheld tv right beside me. its a compact crt. not exactly like a tv's crt. differnt design, and placement of the electron gun, placed underneath instead of right behind.

But I'm still not sure if the GameGear is a LCD or a CRT. I'll ask the guys at IGN. They'll know. But they hardly ever reply.

A lot of portable TVs are in fact LCDs. CRTs are about 1 1/2 inch deep for every inch diagonal (I think thats the measurement). Unless you want to change the laws of physics, or spend incredible amounts of money, its not getting any thinner. I can guarantte you its an LCD, I will bet 1000 bucks on it. It doesnt turn rainbowy when you touch it because theres a glass/plastic plate in front of the acutal screen. If it was a crt, it would be a constant image no matter how you look at it, but like any other lcd, it looks crappy as you view from an angle.

"placed underneath instead of right behind."

yeah that's what I thought. I thought it was put to the side, and the electron beam is reflected.. that's what I originally thought. I don't know if it's true.

Here's how you can test it. Drop your game gear and see if it implodes. :) If it implodes, it is a CRT. If it does not, then it is an LCD.

BTW, I would also bet that it is an LCD.
