I have both a Mustec 1200(?) and a HP 4300c, the HP is much faster of the two and does a very nice job. Both of these are low end personal scanners. The biggest gripe I have about the HP is the apparent inablility to shut of the automatic "straighten" feature, it will often grap a wrong edge and rotate a image that does not need or want to be staightened.

I've got the Canon D660U. It's pretty good considering it was only about 100.00. Even has a film adapter included w/ it so you can scan your negatives or slides directly.

I got the mustek (ScanMagic) 1200 CU. Really cheap scanner that I got even cheaper on a bankruptcy sale a year ago I think, paid like 20$ or something. It's slow as hell but make decent scans and works reliably. For a user like me who scans the occasional pic from a party or vacation and some cd covers once in a while it's actually perfect. el cheapo rulez:)

<< Canon N650U >>

I too have this and it's great! Tiny, and no power cord to juggle around. The quality of the scans are excellent and fairly fast!!! The only drawback is that I don't have a good enough printer to go alonger with it.

epson 636u, USB ;-)

it's 2 years old, and it's great =) it's my sister's scanner...

i just use the included software for my scanning... i don't do anything fancy...

--

any scanner that came out within the past few years will be fine for most users.

some will require certain specializations like transparencies (which require specific scanners since transparency adapters suck)...

as for interface, definitely go USB if you can. high end, go scsi.

go to a site like pricegrabber and price something out. then go here, or chech deja, for any comments on the actual model.

when i was scanner shopping, there was an HP that i was looking at, but it had problems, so, i went with the epson. yeah, it is my sister's scanner, but still, i picked it.

I've got a 4 or 5 year old HP ScanJet 5p SCSI. Scans very good quality but is a bit noisy. Probably too good for my needs. 600 dpi is about all that you need. After that you can't see the difference.

I have the Canon N1220U.

USB, just the one cable, very nice, very thin, moderate speed scanning, very good quality scans.

Visioneer 4400 USB. Very fast and the quality is excellent. It also comes with Paperport software to organize documents and so on. I got if for $70 at Staples, with $60 of rebates! Unbeatable deal, IMHO.
