What type of monitors do newer GPU's prefer?

Might be a dumb question but ..

Are new video cards better optimized for 16:10 ratio monitors (eg. 1680*1050), or do they perform just as well on 4:3 ratio monitors (1600*1200)?

(I am of course asking about gaming performance)

Performance should be the same if the number of pixels is the same.

So the same card should run equally well on both a 1280*1024 monitor and a 1440*900 monitor, right?

Roughly, yes. The 1440x900 should just be slightly faster, since it has just a bit fewer pixels, doubt you could ever tell the difference.
