What type of mini USB cable is this?

Can someone tell me exactly what this size/type of cable is called, and what this particular one is for? It possibly came with a Nikon L series camera, but in searching google images for a Nikon cable, they look like they show more pins in the smaller connector, and they seem go all the way across the connector. Whereas mine has 4 pins, an empty block, then 2 more pins (6 total).

Also, it's smaller than a regular mini USB cable (ie. for cell phones), like this.

That isn't a USB plug. Sure the other end may be USB but that plug is a proprietary plug. Possibly from a blackberry or other mobil device.

On the contrary. It is indeed a USB connector. I have a couple of them, and yes, they are proprietary, but shared by some cameras, e.g., Nikon and Olympus. Here is a shot of three USB converter connectors that come in a kit:

USB

You can probably find the exact cable that came with your Nikon here -

USB compatible but not USB. The standard has certain conectors defined for which that isn't one. As the USB pic show the 3 standard USB plugs as defined by the USB spec. Anything else is just a propriatary connector that is compatible with USB.

But thats getting technical. 😉

Yeah - we're splitting hairs now. That particular D shaped connector is not used any more. That was back when most cameras used 4 pin Firewire, and was a small alternative to that.

One in question on left. Mini USB on right.

There is supposed to be a newer smaller USB connector coming out, perhaps this is one of them?

In the computers world the term "None Standard Standard" became a Standard. 😉

Many Vendors that use devices connected to the Computer's USB use None Standard connectors and come with their own special cables.

Sometimes few vendors use the same None Standard Connector, but that does Not make it a real Standard.

May be we should call it a "Standarett" 😛 .

Ha, ha! I like "standarette." But, one end of that cable is standard. Only the end that connects to the camera is not. I suppose that makes it a half-assed USB? 🙂

Garmin comes to mind there.

My Kodak camera has a plug like that.... which of course is impossible to replace in the event that I lose it. It is the only USB cable that i own that I absolutely must not lose.

Yea. My FujiFilm camera has a different proprietary end as well. But, if I lose it, monoprice has replacements for sale, but even then, the cable isn't that important to me, I just use the SD card reader on my laptop to transfer pictures over.
