At one point in time my royally fat arse could do 160 non-stop (was still fat back then).
The answer was simple. For disciplinary action my teacher would make unruley students do push-ups or fail the class. (Of course if you did the pushups, you still had to do the class work :p)

Now adays from whiney student making childish complaints to parents about the embarasment of having to do excersizes in class has led many states and/or cities to make it illegal for teachers to have students do excersizes. What a bunch of BS...

Anyway, the best way to start doing pushups is to do pushups. That short story is from my teenage years and only 20lbs ago. Although I weigh in at a heafty 209lbs (5' 7½") I can still do 42 non-stop. Once you get the muscles, it is nearly impossible to loose them. I am sure with little practice I can get to a 100+ again :Q:Q.

Start a paypal fund and get at least $1000 and I say I can do it live in front of a web cam within a month :p:D

Yeah, i remember a shop teacher that had us do pushups as well. It was great actually... he had us do pullups in the electrical room too.

And i had a physics teacher that made us do dead ants infront of the class if we were late... now that's what you call humilating. You come to class late, the teacher would literally stop the class, make you go ontop of the table, lay your back, and pretend you were a dying ant, with legs and arms shaking... for a good 30 secs. Needless to say, i was only late for that class once.

Yeah I read the question.

What type of lift would help me do more pushups?

Thats in the title

As far as lifting weights, what type of lifts would help me build whatever muscle it is that gets strengthend by pushups?

He says that later then he also says this.

I just wanna be able to do 20 without having to struggle like I'm constipated on the last one coming up.

Now if you guys are telling this guy to practice on bench press on reps of about 15+ or to a figure comparable to the amount he wants to get doing push ups then its fine.

I still stand by if he wants to increase the amount of push ups he should simply do more push ups. Its not about strength once you can do about 10 of them. More about endurance, different type of strength.
