What type of keyboard do you like?

A few months ago I took over my wife's Microsoft wireless 4000 keyboard (Amazon Linky)after she got a laptop. I thought it was going to be an upgrade over my old "split" microsoft keyboard that I had been using for years. Well, it seemed like I was routinely having to "retype" keys that I either missed or were dropped. I did some typing tests and noticed that as speeds got over 100 or so, I really had trouble with keys not registering. After trying some FPS games with the keyboard (I typically use my N52) I noticed that even with a slight pressure release on the 'W' I would stop running and I would have to repress the key to go again---which got very annoying. I think the issue is related to the mechanics of the key press and not the wireless link.

I started thinking of trying out a new keyboard last week and a friend had a dell keyboard laying around he said I could have. It's a very regular (if minimalist design) that I would normally dismiss because it's not a "split" design. However, I decided to put away my snobish ways ( 🙂 ) and give it a go.

The keyboard is surprsingly quiet and I easily do 100+ with none of the "key missing" problems I had with my 4000. I haven't talked to others so I don't know if me being so picky is typical of others who type faster than the norm.

If you type fast I'm interested if you've had any of the same issues or if I'm just overly picky.

EDIT: This is the keyboard I'm talking about Dell Keyboard

EDIT II: So I found the model number and I'm floored this keyboard is going for ~$12 at Amazon.
Amazon.com $12

Love my mechanical keyboards. Model M and Dell AT101W for me. Both will probably outlive me.

I type a little over 80wpm the last time I checked.

An old Dell 2004 keyboard, still the best for typing purposes. For music control in general, including in games, the original G15.

I'm using the newer model G15 on my desktop... I had the older one, but spilled a glass of water on it a few weeks ago 🙁 I don't use it to its full functionality, but I find the lcd screen to be invaluable for gaming.

I use a generic logitech usb keyboard on my laptop... one thing that I always wished I could find but haven't been able to is a full-size bluetooth keyboard without the numpad. my generic keyboard is a hair too long to fit into my laptop bag and I don't have enough usb ports for everything I need when I'm working off my laptop (I need an external kb/mouse, usb headset, and usb nic all connected... I've only got 3 usb ports, though, so I end up just sucking it up and using the laptop keyboard)

I like ones with tall keys like the old IBM model M. I can't get one at work, so I have an IBM enhanced USB keyboard which were standard equipment a few years ago here until we switched to the Microsoft bundles.

rolling with a IBM M2 at work right now but i have the M at home and i like it better, much more sturdy.

got me a MS Natural Ergo KB 4000 for the office. My first split kb. I freaken love it, although you do have to break in the spacebar cuz it's noisy at first. I have a standard dell kb at home and after using the ergo it feels horrible, like im cramping my wrists together. I plan on picking up another ergo for home when they go on sale.

I am using the Logitech Dinovo for notebooks and it seems that I can actually type faster because of the flatnesss of the keyboard.

I'm using a : Microsoft Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000.

I hate typing on non ergo keyboards. I can still type well, but typing on an ergo keyboard is just so comfortable. I do wish it was more configurable. I don't ever use the zoom function or the Back/Forward function (have it on my mouse, don't need a zoom).

I have a Dell keyboard like you have pictured, and I like the small footprint. I'm currently using a Model M, and though it's huge and heavy, the keys are very responsive, and it makes typing easy, but noisy :^D

I'm pretty fond of my saitek. Has a nice feel to it although I believe it's gotten a bit louder since I bought it a number of years ago.

i'm using an a-data "office works" keyboard. It has my preferred layout around the Enter key. A large backspace key, large L-shaped enter key, and under the Enter key is the "/shift\" keys, in that order.

It's so hard to find a keyboard with this layout.

I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard. I have no trouble typing as fast as I want, but my co-workers wish it wasn't so loud. I don't type 100+wpm but I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 10 in the company (800 people).

The co-worker to my right says "It's like working in an office where there are bursts of machine gun fire going off all the time."

mechanical keyboard is what I prefer. Getting harder to get a good one though. The old ibm ones were great but getting harder to find.

I have that same keyboard, love it...I have 3, just incase....one time during a cs 1.6 match, my dog jumped up and knocked my pop down on my keyboard, it was screwed..unplugged it, unboxed a new keyboard in second, plopped it in, in about 10 seconds I was up and running again...we won the match too, woot woot!

I've got 3 of them. Keep your eyes open at local thrift shops, and they turn up regularly.

That's exactly what I have at work but it's a bit louder than I like.

I keep hearing "mechanical" keyboard those would just be way too loud for me. One of the things I really appreciate about the Dell keyboard I linked in the OP is that it's very quiet yet not mushy.

I'm not a super typer but Dell makes surprisingly good keyboards. I make very few mistakes typing on them and the shape and spacing between the keys seem perfect. I can type ~60wpm.

I use the dell one in the OP at work. I have a model M and a logitech g15 at home. thinking about converting the model M to USB, but the windows key is pretty handy sometimes...
