What type of file is a *.dat ???

*.dat is very diverse

it can be a simple plain text (data) document or some other "data" document
it can be the actual MPEG file of a VCD
it can be the default extension for some file (aol's newsreader decoding thingee did that to some files)

 

.dat is a data file extension that can be used in anyway the programmer defines it.
