i'm at a doctors office and the office next door has wireless wide open. i can access Network Neighborhood and i can install their printers to my laptop.

many small companies think decent IT guys cost too much money, so they get whichever current employee knows the most about AOL 9.0 Optimized to play IT guy, so he/she goes to Best Buy and picks up a wireless router and plugs it up, etc. there you go.

nope, it covers the network, the latest revision of HIPAA, April of this year.
besides, even without network security, if you have any Word/Excel files regarding patients in your shared files, they are covered by HIPAA.
besides, what kind of moron wants to meet minimum security requirements, especially when you are a doctors office and you have all the necessary data for Identity thieves to go crazy on.

i work next door to a mortgage company...i've told them a few times i can get on their network, see their comps, etc...they do nothing about it. All someone has to do is pull up, and they'd have access to a ton of financial records and information, but do these people care? no...
Well when I was working with that stuff (from the medical side) the protection was in the EMR and and the network. However much like OSHA you will not get checked out untill there is a breach The big hospitals are not really the big issue it is the smaller clinic and private practice that has me concerned

yup, they tried to tighten things up a bit this year with the april deadline. i think it was the 3rd phase of the hipaa requirements.

you'd be surprised how many big, prominent businesses leave their networks wide open. i've done many, many audits here in my town and the results are absolutely shocking. a lot of data and privacy at risk. the thing that gets me is that people don't seem to care. at least they won't care until something terrible happens or a lawsuit is filed.

We have both at my office... the main wireless network, which extends throughout the building, is secured. However, we have two small hotspots in conference rooms that are completely open so that visitors can use the internet. However, the unsecure channels are not connected to the rest of the network, and they are burried deep inside the building, so the chance of anyone on the outside gaining access is about zero.
