what type of apps run on a $2 million server?

I was looking at IBM's website and noticed this

What applications (specifically, i read the general profile that IBM gave) could possibly require that much power? Does anyone here work for a company that uses something similar?

very VERY large busnesses that need to serve files, webpages and highend database stuff to tons and tons of people

Databases can easily eat up that much power, no doubt.

We have 2 12 processor HP boxes that are used to run databases and a custom program we sell to other people. The funny part is Linux on a 2 processor PIII box is only about 1/2x slower than the 12 proc HP-UX box running our application (I'm not on the dev team so I can't comment on why that would be).

We have a server somewhat like that in our California office. It is a 32 way that serves a few thousand users concurrently. It serves a Java based title/escrow application to our offices all over the country. Would love to have one of my own though

Rewrite the app in C and you'll probably be able sell the machine and get one 1/3 the size to do the same job =)

C# might actually take a bite into Java's market! Well, as soon as MS writes .net VMs for other platforms.
