I have the Hauppauge tv card. I hate their software!!!
I just want to use the RCA inputs to record or save shows from
my dvr. But their software is very ota geared and messy to use.

With the drivers installed for the Hauppauge, I tried several apps like
virtualdub that can record off tv cards.
But not so with the Hauppauge series.
The video shows up in the preview, but the recordings (capture format) the Hauppauge uses is not compat with playback apps like windows media player.
Virtualdub records an AVI file. I always get an error when trying to play these
recordings back using any app saying a decoder for HC?? is needed (sorry..cant remember) but these Hauppauge cards use some off the wall format.
I just wanted to avoid installing the Hauppauge software.

Windows movie maker doesnt like the Hauppauge cards either...

And... I have installed every codec available. The codec is not the issue. Its the Hauppauge
recording format that is the problem. That is why I dislike the Hauppauge tv cards.

So I need a good cheap simple tv card that apps like vurtualdvd will work with...???
And windows movie maker.

I'm sure I used to capture video from my old Hauppauge TV card with VirtualDub. The options in the Video menu when in capture mode should let you set the output format and codec. I think for those old Hauppauge cards you have to leave the video format in YUY rather than RGB, but once it's in an AVI file that shouldn't matter.

Have you tried loading the captured AVI file into VirtualDub?

Sorry that I can't be more specific as it's been a long old while, but I'm 95% sure you can do what you're trying to do with what you have.

Which Hauppauge card do you have? The PVR series is excellent and works with most video capture and time shifting apps.

MCE 150
I found this info:
"hauppauge card is using hardware HCW2 compression, virtualdub can't compress it because it is already compressed"

So any avi recording has the HCW2 compression issue, on playback like when using win media player. And trying play the avi recording with virtualdub will give the HCW2 error.

I just want to record from the a/v inputs with the cards drivers installed, and not using the
hauppauge software. Nor using any media pc type software like Sagetv or beyondtv.

Virtualdub found the card and displays video and records an avi file. But these avi files can not be played back due to the hauppauge HCW2 compression.
And I have not come across any other sucessful recording software that doesnt choke trying to record using the MCE 150 card.

Ahh, the hardware MPEG cards. . . I had one briefly, and returned it on discovering it was a nightmare to use :(

From what I can google, those cards can't be used to capture AVI. There are a few threads around the net about highly convoluted ways to get it done that I didn't entirely follow.

Your best bet might be to use the horrible bundled software and convert it afterwards. I think when I tried it I could use FlaskMPEG (now old and unsupported) to convert the MPEG2 file to AVI, but it was taking forever on my then brand new Athlon 1.2GHz PC . . .that's how long ago it was, lol.

Now I?m getting there...
So I again ask...

"I need a good cheap simple tv card that apps like virtualdub will work with...???

What did you get to replace your hardware mpeg card???
I need something that has a/v inputs, not just a tuner.
Prefer pci or pci-e internal.

It would be great to have a capture card that windows movie maker recognizes
as a recording source.
