What transfer rate should i be getting with 768kbs adsl?

768kbps, obviously! 🙂
Divide that by 8 to get the KBps and you get around 172. This is assuming max throughput on the site you're transferring from too.

Umm...768/8 = 96 KB/sec 🙂

Factor in a 5-10% overhead for TCP/IP, and your max throughput should be around 86-91 KB/sec.

<< 86-91 KB/sec >>

That's about right, that?s about what I get. That's only if I'm downloading though. You may even find your connection going higher then what its spec for. Sometimes I'll get 700-900kbps download (burst over a 1 Meg on some instances), and 300kbps upload (burst upwards to 800kbps), before settling down to around 150kbps.

Or if luck should have it, your carrier my just suck and you?ll see nothing like that.

LOL, I wish 768k was 172 🙂 172k/sec is approaching T1 speeds..

Yep, same here. I've downloaded at 96k/sec sustained from my ISP, I rarely get that from other servers though. I average probably around 50k/sec, but can get 75-85k/sec from a good server.

Those spikes from alter.net are probably hurting me 🙁 201 and 541, Blech..

Some of you post your tracert results to the forums 🙂

T1 peak is 1.5 Mbits so 686 kbits is pretty decent if you are sharing the t1 with others..

The number of people who still confuses between bits and bytes astounds me... I heard from someone once, that 400 Mbits firewire was faster than u2w scsi ( then 80 MB/s max = 640 Mbits, now 160 MB/s = 1.28 Gbits)...and he was an IT tech...(machead) *grins*
and recently from an IT administrator: we are upgrading from 4 t1's at 6 megs to 1/2 an OC3 at 10 megs...then in 3 months full oc3 at 20 megs...

hmm...lets see, 4x1.5 Mbits = 6 Megabits...okay so first statement is in megabits,
now OC3=28xT1 right = 42Mbits half of that = 21 Mbits... uh where does he get 10 Megs...unless someone is jacking him off and giving him 1/4 OC3 for the price of 1/2 and later full price OC3 for 1/2 the bandwidth.... unless i'm totally confused and am totally wrong... someone please correct me if i am wrong...

Okay....i've been reading up on it.... thats what i get assuming i know everything..*laffs*
T1 = 1.5 Mbits
DS3 = 28 x T1 = 45 Mbits about 1/3 of an OC3
OC3 = 155 Mbits = ~100 T1 = 20 MB/s (megabytes) therefore 1/2 OC3 = 10 MB/s = 77.5 Mbits = HOLY $#!T

man...i better install napster on my work pc...
