Basically I need a topic for a paper of mine. I have read and synthesize 4-5 research articles on a common topic and then deteremine what is known and what still needs to be researched. I thought about maybe doing the origins of life, but everything I find on it are books, not articles.

Soooooo any ideas? anyone?

Edit: Also, it doesnt have to be a science, it can be a social science issue as well.

Freshman @ NCSU... 4-5 research articles on a common topic to be synthesized with comments on direction for future research... Just hit up nature.com, sciencemag.org or newscientist.com & look for a headline/topic that interests you. If it's on one of their webpages, you'll have an easy time finding a few articles about the topic.

alzheimer's. the exact pathway how APP causes the formation of AB1-42 plaques is unknown, and the roles of cAMP, CREB, pKA and various other components of the pathway are also unknown.

I've been reading about String Theory / M theory. Still a lot of research stuff going on there.
The deep ocean stuff is still has a lot that is relatively unknown.
Also : We don't know an incredible amount about all the planets in our solar system, still lots to research there :)

You can also research the "cause" of Homosexuality. There have been a couple papers on it awhile ago. The question of whether it is some sort of 'imbalance' or a new gene, or if it's purely social. Etc. I don't know if it ended up all being a bunch of bunk, but something might be there.

i'd use some article finding system and then from there try to look for an emerging topic that you find relatively interesting.

You can pick anything! Just go with something that interests you and write.

If it was me I'd probabley do gentically modified foods or growth hormones in food and their effects on health.

Thanks for the suggestions. I believe I may write about the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. Anybody wouldnt happen to know of any scholarly articles about it would you?

I suggest Google Scholar to help find academic journals. I was helping Jello write a paper this morning and we found 5 good articles for his obscure topic (it was about the effects of globalization on the wine industry and some movie that he had to watch for class about it) in about ten minutes.

Sure, there are a plethora of articles about the extinction of the dinosaurs. You can compare/contrast the different theories and then discuss how more research would provide evidence for/against them.

I assume NCSU students have access to the Web of Science via your library's website. Search for keywords 'Chicxulub', 'K-T Boundary', 'Cretaceous Tertiary boundary'; that should get you on the right path. Also, check the National Museum of Natural History's Department of Paleobiology's website on dinosaur extinction here: http://www.nmnh.si.edu/paleo/blast/references.htm

Good luck!

All areas. It is human pride and arrogance to think we know everything there is to know about any subject.

They really need to focus on deep sea research to find Godzilla. Make sure he stays in hibernation.
