My mom's fridge broke....she said she wants me to fix it. I have no idea what tools i need to do this. As an engineer, I told my mom straight..."I have no idea how to fix this". She just reposnded. "Well, if it works, it works. If it doesn't, I'll just buy a new one....no big deal".

This is all i know:

I may have to recharge it, so I may need a r134a recharge kit.

that is what I said, but she insists that I do it. I mean, I have no problems doing it (I like taking stuff apart).

just start taking shit apart until you come to something you dont have a tool for...

when you have a kitchen with no counter space due to parts and warm food, tell her to buy a new one.

Uh do you even know if its the compressor?

If you do swap the compressor won't you need gauges and hoses and manifolds and shit?

The freon in the system needs to be recovered. This requires specific equipment.

They might not even rent this type of equipment without the correct certs that show you have the training to use it. Call a repairman, they might give you an approximate quote over the phone. btw-how can you say it is the compressor without some diagnosis?

That.

I fixed a fridge once by taking some bits off and then banging on other bits. Only worked for a week, but still counts.

Just take some stuff apart and mess with stuff for a while. It'll be fun!

because the compressor is not even working. I was there when it died. It just made this woerd sound and it just stopped. Next morning, the fridge was no longer cool but everything else worked. Looks like I may need a permit to do this because of the freon. I may just say screw it and tell her to buy another.

Vacuum pump
Torch and solder
Copper tubing and tubing cutter
Pressure gauge manifold
Refrigerant (around here you have to be licensed to buy the 24lb-30lb bottles)
Scale

That's all I can think of off hand. You would be better off hiring someone to fix it.

Hire a repairman if she doesn't want a new one. I'm not sure you want to fvck with freon for the first time just because she tells you to.

Ask Sea Moose...

You probably need a license for the refrigerants... at least here you do...

I told my mom to just hire someone else. You have to know your limits, and well, this is well beyond them. I was gonna tell her to buy a new one.....then i saw the prices....$5k each.
