What tools do I need to change my own spark plugs?

Yes i'm buying a book. Today.

What tools would I need to change the spark plugs in a '99 Civic? Approximately how much should I be paying for this stuff?

I would use a torque wrench.... usually you're supposed to adjust the spark plug to the correct tightness with a torque wrench.

You need a 5/8" spark plug socket, a ratchet, and a torque wrench (torquing them properly is important on the aluminum head).

The plugs are deeply recessed in the head so you'll need an extension for the ratchet too. Good luck!

yOU WILL ALSO NEED A PLUG GAPPING TOOL.

***Edit: Caps were not necessary***

hand tighten, then torque. don't cross thread the plugs. while you're at it, check wires and distributor.

Torque wrench may be best but just tightening until you feel the crush washer, well, crush, works.

Also, using motor oil on the threads is fine. Those anti-sieze compounds suck.

Main thing is do it when the engine is cold. Like in the morning before you go anywhere. Cleaning the distributor cap is a good idea too. Look for cracks and burn marks. If any are there replace both the cap and rotor. Otherwise wipe it out with a clean dry cloth.

EDIT: Does a 99 civic have a dist cap?

Looks like it 🙂

I've been reading that NGK plugs and wires are (apparently) recommended, at least according to some Honda forums...do any stores actually carry this brand? ie. pep boys, walmart, etc? or am i stuck buying it online? (i was looking to do it this weekend)..

yah, pep boys carries it. I'm pretty sure walmart doesn't. Make sure you get the right NGK plugs, NGK makes around 8 different types of plugs for each metal type. The price difference can be pretty big for the different types, so if it seems like you're getting an insanely good deal, there's a chance you're getting the wrong plug.
