What to use to start charcoal grill that won't leave lighter fluid taste?

I always use lighter fluid. Its the only thing I've ever known. But you have to let the fire burn down significantly before you can put the meat on, or else the meat will taste like lighter fluid. Over the weekend that is typically not a problem as I have plenty of time. During the weak I am more time limited.

So, is there anything that is quick and easy to use that won't leave my meat tasting funky? I tried pouring some vegetable oil on the coals and lighting them, but that did not work in the least.

Thanks!

Gasoline. A nice sized cup of gas on the briquets, cover the grill for ten minutes to let it soak in, then light it up. Don't forget the video camera.

Which is what you should do, otherwise use a propane grill.

Roofing torch. But instead of using it to light the charcoal, just use the torch directly on the meat and cook with it.

I actually use a torch in conjunction with a chimney. if nothing else, it's fun.

Thanks so much for the serious replies. Just ordered one of those charcoal chimnies, and a box of the fire starter cubes, from amazon. The chimney device looks cool as heck!

You don't t need the starter cubes at all, one sheet of crumpled newspaper is enough.

The price of the chimney is fine. But you got seriously raped by Amazon on the fire starter cubes. $11.30 for a box of Weber firestarter cubes? Damn, that's almost 3X the normal price. You can get the same Weber firestarter cubes at Home Depot and Lowes for $3.99. This is why Amazon makes money. People just blindly buy from Amazon now. Amazon is not always cheap and rarely the price leader.

But if you're using the chimney, you don't need starter cubes. One sheet of newspaper is all you need. I use junk mail. Starter cube is useful if you have something like the Green Egg and you want to start light the lump charcoal in the Egg.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned it yet, but wadded up newspaper and a chimney is probably what you're looking for.
