How do you remove the pink thermal compound that comes with the heatsink? I was using my heatsink and its default paste and now would like to get rid of it.

Is cleaning the top of the chip enuff? Or do I have to remove the pink gunk on the side of the chip too?

nail-polish remover = acetone.

other good things are isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) and ethanol (95%+). i've got access to photometric grade stuff, but the sterile isopropyl you can get at your average drugstore or supermarket is ok too. i like to use q-tips to gently rub the chips too. the q-tip has a little give--if you push too hard, it just bends.

I take it the pink gunk isn't supposed to just dissolve with rubbing alcohol. Took a blow drier and heated it a bit and then tried to rub it off. Is the nail polish remover much easier? Final thing, do I need to remove the pink gunk that is on the side of the chip, or just the top surface?

Grab a bottle of nail polish remover gel. Use a tiny amount and with a Q-tip to remove it. The pad will be totally gone in 10 seconds flat without even using any pressure. That stuff rocks. And the best part: my wife already had a bottle. Nothing to buy. :)
