A brick??? But seriously I`ve seen people post about using rubbing alcohol and various types of cloth... I simply use a paper towel and wipe it clean then apply the thermal compound (I use Artic Silver) but dont use a knife or whatever they say to use... I just squeeze a small amount out and use the end of the tube to spread it out (its kinda rough but fairly even when I`m done). I then attach the heatsink (Alpha PAL35T) and give it a little twist and movement to make the excess push out... It must work fine for me bacause of this...

P3 700e @1050 or 1000mhz 1.65 volts
CUSL2 1001.a

I have cleaned a cpu on both sides with CRC brand contact cleaner and an old tooth brush... Yes I mean I cleaned between the pins with the cleaner and the brush it had corrosion because of a failed gasket on a peltier setup. The CPU was a darn nice Celeron 366 @651mhz 2.1 BTW I still have it too and it works!!!

clean edge of your credit card to clean up the excessive amount of grease.

then use rubbing alcohol, to wipe it clean. just don't drink it, even when ya r depressed.

then spit on the surface, and lick it shining, seriously, it helps desolve some residue from the finish...

after that, time for mouth wash...
