What to use to play .MOV file?

Muse

I have a music CD and when I put it in the DVD drive of my Windows 2000 machine all I see on the drive is a .MOV file of around 29 MB. I double clicked the file and was told that my Windows Media Player needed some kind of enhancement and I went to the link. I was informed that the enhancement couldn't be applied. Then I realized that MS Media Player 9 was about the only thing I didn't update when I did my Windows Updates a month or so ago. So, I installed MS Media Player 9. When I configured Media Player, it had set itself up as the default player for many kinds of media files and I deselected MP3 and maybe a couple of other types because I use Winamp 2.80. I did not notice .MOV files among the types Media Player was setting itself up for. I went to play the file again and this time a File Open With dialog opened. I picked out Media Player, knowing it probably wouldn't work. What can I do? Thanks for any help.

OK, but Quicktime scares me. Back in the mid-90's every CD I bought seemed to have a different version of Quicktime on it and it was a really confusing situation. You were given the option to keep your existing version or upgrade and it seemed impossible to tell if it was a good idea to upgrade or not. It seemed entirely wacky. Besides, Quicktime was originally for Apple computers and the Windows versions, well, it just seemed confusing as hell. I've installed Quicktime in recent years but it always seems that something goes wrong and I wind up removing it. I would really appreciate any tips. I'm running Win2000 SP4.

When I go to the link I choose the option for Quicktime 6.4 and iTunes for Windows 2000. There's no option for just Quicktime. I download but all I get is the iTunes 4.1 install. Nuts as usual with Quicktime.

Edit: It turns out the Quicktime is embedded in the iTunes installation file. You'd never know if you didn't plow full steam ahead into the installation. I've got it installed and my MOV file plays but the screen is around 8% if that of my screen real estate, and that's double size. That seems pretty nasty. Maybe I'll look around for an MOV file conversion utility.

QUICKTIME .. Apple's GENIUS programing .. prolly Apple's 2nd Greatest Application Ever written for Windows.

You could also try the Quicktime Alternative, I heard about it. I reckon it's free and works better than Apple Quicktime. However, I can't help with getting it since I don't have it myself right now.

Errr... if you follow the link and go to the upper left hand corner of the screen and click where is says "download" then you can go download the QT player. No QT + iTunes just QT. Why are you afriad of QT? You install it, double click on the QT movie and it plays? What size is the movie you are trying to play supposed to be?

I guess I'm in the minority but I've never had a problem w/QT for windows and I use it on a fairly regular basis.

QuickTime is a crap player and now that the MPEG-4 standard has been adopted the old thing about it having good codecs is, well, old.

I also recommend QuickTime Alternative . Make sure you get the 120 version in the links. There is also a Real Alternative. Both include Media Player Classic which I have highly recommended for all media long before these codec packs.
