What to use to capture DV video?

It shouldn't really matter... you could even use Windows Movie Maker. It's just reading a digital stream and writing it to a file.

I've used WMM, Nero, ATI, and Studio.

IMO, Studio worked best, but probably because I have the MovieBox, for conversion outside the box.

The ATI AIW worked well too.

does it matter what encoder is used (or is an encoder even involved)?
my friend mentions 'mainconcept' dv encoder but i really have no idea.

I'm not sure if you guys have run into this problem, but my DV Camera can record in widescreen, I suppose 16x9. When I transfer it and burn it to dvd, it has the postage stamp effect, bars on top and bottom and left and right.

What do you guys use to convert it to anamorphic or to completely fill a 16x9 tv?

Ulead Mediastuido (not videostudio)...very good program, good compromise between usefulness and options.

except if you want to save it to something other than a crappy quality wmv...
