I am looking to upgrade my CPU. I have a celeron 466 (yeah, pretty old) and I am looking to upgrade. I am using an Asus P3 motherboard. Need something that will handle loads of 3D games and other general bits and pieces. I have been reading loads of articles on PIII ans 4's as well as AMD. Anybody got any suggestions? Help is what I need.

im very fond of the athlon and duron
some of the new ddr boards are great performers
and some of the more mature kt133a (pc133) boards are very stable and solid solutions

Well, if you want to stay cheap, get a PIII 750. It would work on your P3 Mobo and is about $100 on pricewatch. If you go with a Duron, the CPU's are cheaper, but keep in mind you have to buy a new motherboard, which would add up on the cost. So i would recommend a CPU upgrade to a 750 and up. Buy a 100mhz fsb though since your probably running a BX board. If your running a P3V4X, than get any PIII CPu and you'll be all set.

Are you using a Slotket adapter for you current Celeron 466MHz? Also, what model is your Asus board? Is it the P3B-F?

If you want a relatively cheap upgrade, you can get a Celeron II 800MHz and overclock it to 1GHz+. If you go the AMD route, you'll have to spend more on a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and probably a new power supply. It all depends on how much your willing to spend.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, got a P3V4X. Tempted by the Athlons though. Bit cheaper than PIII's and 4's. I'll have a shop around.

Well, seeing as you can get a 1GHz athlon for under 100, and motherboards arent too expensive, and you can even get DDR for really really cheap right now, I would have to say that this is one of the best time to build ANY type of system. Since DDR is probably going to stick around for a while and you can get a DDR board for like 135 and a 1G tbird for under 100 and 256 pc2100 for like 65 bucks, that puts you at a whole new system for 300. You will probably want a new PSU though, I went from a celeron to a tbird and needed a new one.

If you arent looking to spend that much, you can just use your old RAM(if it is at least PC100 or PC133) and just buy a KT133A MB and stick it in there. They run just over 100, so that would put you at just over 200 for the MB and Proc.

Just my thoughts
