Hello all,
Thinking about upgrading my MB/CPU and looking for suggestions? Currently have an xp2700 and asus an78x -deluxe MB with Corsair 2700 memory (1 gig). Wondering thoughts on the new AMD64 bit CPU or Intel ones? Ive been using AMD mostly for past few years. My needs are mostly for Gaming, Burning DVD, video editing etc. Do i need to new memory to? or can i used that corsair memory? or should i? Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

thx

DFI LanParty UT @ 107 Newegg
3200 or 3400 @ 204 or 282 Newegg

Not a bad upgrade if you ask me!!!

I would stay away from the intels. My brother just upgraded to the 3.2 Prescott and it raised the temp in his room by 6 degrees (honest), he sent it back last week and now is the owner of a DFI (from above) and a 3400 (Clawhammer).

I would go with the A64 3400+ and the DFI board, great overclocking potential.

Another vote for the DFI and 3400+. Good reviews on the board and a great CPU for that price.

Get 3200+ instead and save the $80. If you are getting the best overclocking board for socket 754, chances are you'll be able to squeeze both chips to the max. Chances are that 3200+ Newcastle at 2.4ghz will match the 3400+ 2.4 1mb when overclocked to the max (say 2.7 on air) since you'll be able to use a lower multiplier and higher "FSB" with the 3200+. Also often a larger amount of cache onboard slightly decreases the overclocking potential of the chip (making me favour the Newcastle off the bat). More cache only helps in rare cases (and doom3). If $80 isnt a lot for you, then sure go for the 3400+. Keep the old memory and use ratios.

If you do not intend to overclock and don't want to uprade for a while, it might be worth it to go with 3400+ and later when you upgrade, just get a new PCI-E motherboard and new CPU. Keep the old RAM and just use Ratios.

thx for the info, I prob wont be overclocking that much, not really into that as much as when i was younger. So for the ram i have can i use that with the new board and CPU without losing to much in the performance ? if so what memory should go with for that board/cpu combo?

thx for all the info

Just use the same ram as you wont lose more than 5-10% performance if you implement RAM:CPU ratios. In other words, the cost of replacing PC2700 ram to get PC3200 ram for a total of 1 gig is going to be at least $150-160. Definately not worth it considering you can spend that much towards a faster cpu or a videocard. Besides back in the days Corsair made a lot better ram in comparison to competition than it does now. So your PC2700 chips could easily overclock to PC3200 speeds.

you'll have to [at least highly recommended]
the least you'll have to run a restore, because once you change the mobo win [any win] wont boot without a restore [put cd in and boot from cd and select "repair existing win"]. now the trouble with restore is that it will slow the system down, in simple terms your win will be confused hence slower.
