Unfortantly, I can't afford both right now, but I want to upgrade something for Christmas.
What I got:
XP1700+ with a Nforce2 MB and 1 gig of ram (pc2100 :( ).
Radeon 9500

So should I go for a new A64 cpu and MB or a 6800GT?

If I get the VC first, how big of a henderence will the cpu be?

peace

Tough call. Your CPU is well matched with your graphics card. I know you don't want to hear this, but maybe you should wait and upgrade both... perhaps in March 2005?

I have a friend who runs a 9800 Pro with an XP1700+, the result is pretty nice, but you can tell that the CPU is holding it back. I think this would become even more obvious with a 6800 GT.

If you just have to upgrade something... I'd say go for the graphics card first. The 6800 GT is a sweet card and will last you awhile.

I agree. Just wait and upgrade both as your system would be a huge bottleneck with a 6800GT. If you really want to upgrade a part you need to decide that by yourself depending on what you want more.

I have the exact system almost (my motherboard is a cheaper Compaq chipset or something, 512 MB of RAM, Radeon 9500 Pro) Just my opinion, but I think my CPU is holding back my video card, I'd say go Athlon 64 now, and overclock the video in the mean time maybe.

edit: That is, if you're adamant to upgrade 1 part for Christmas and not wait like the other 2 have said, which is what I'm planning on doing next christmas

I would either upgrade CPU and mobo now or wait and upgrade all at the same time.
