what to say when contacting a potential network via cold e-mail?

I don't know the person but they are part of my University's alumni association. What is the best approach when writing the email?
I'm contacting them cold and to ask to pass along my resume or to help me secure an interview when the person doesn't even know me probably won't work.

Any help?
For those that have been contacted by job seekers, what should I put in the email?

I wouldn't bother...the will never pass along a resume like that unless they are totally stupid, in which case you will be tainted by their stupidity.
