Directing a friend of mine in the cleaning of his CPU, and application of fresh thermal paste. He has some 99% rubbing alcohol on hand but he has no coffee filters which is what I usually use. Any more common substitutions?

i've never used a coffee filter before. i normally use cotton swabs/balls and apply new thermal paste with a plastic lunch bag on my finger.

Yeah, for scrubbing off the old paste there is no harm to come from using fiber shedding materials (seriously).

When done cleaning, hold the cpu at an angle and give it a good douse of the rubbing alcohol to physically flush away any fibers that might have been left on the surface from the scrub portion of your cleaning process.

Then shake off the excess and leave to air dry. The alcohol will evaporate in less than a minute, clean and fiber free.

If doing this results in visible (discoloration) signs of residue remaining on the IHS after the alcohol evaporates then that is to be interpreted as proof that the IHS wasn't really thoroughly cleaned during the scrub/rinse cycle. In this case, repeat until no longer necessary...

old underwear made of 100% cotton. clothes are the only clothe that is high enough in quality, and underwear is the higher quality of them all, its soft, its absorbent, it leaves NO fibers.

Maybe if you wore underwear you wouldn't have that problem.

Sure -- I use underwear rags. I even use paper towels -- sometimes, I use toilet paper.

Talk about being anal-retentive, or picking fly-s*** out of pepper for lapping a CPU!
