parents will be buying sister laptop for christmas.

they asked me to reccommend something. (i know that's their mistake, but whatever)

anyway, what should i reccommend? i'm seriously thinking about suggesting the ibook..

as far as cost goes, if it's reasonable, cost isnt really an issue.

but i'm not really up with laptops.. so i dont know what to reccommend, beyond an ibook. maybe a dell? i got stay away from compaq, though.

suggestions? comments? shut the hell up walleye?

I need more information before I can give you a recommendation. What will your sister use the laptop for? How much previous experience with computers does she have? Does she play computer games? How long does she need it to run on batteries (not plugged in)? How much will she be carrying it around with her? How much weight can she comfortably carry?

BargainSeeker is right, we need that information. If cost is not an issue, then look elsewhere than an iBook. Many excellent notebooks can be had for the same amount of money as an iBook.

If 2500 is within your budget, you might want to talk a look at the Voodoo Envy M355. Its Pentium M based, M9 based, 5+ hours of battery life, looks super slick. But it might be a little more machine than your sister can handle.

umm... typical college student girl?

she doesnt play many computer games, and if necessary, she can still play on my parents computer. (i'm giving them my second computer...xp2400+, radeon 8500 LE, 256mb.)

she wants a laptop based on convenience, not on need. thus, i'd assume her habits and needs would change in accordance with what she is given. prior to this, she's been using her 300 mhz desktop. so anything will be a step up.

get her a celeron processor based one then.
it doesnt seem like she is using it for intense productivity.

If you hate her take the advice above... I would get her something decent, on the light side (unless she is a large girl), she doesn't seem to need much power right now so an ultralight could be an option.

If she will need support and you don't care to provide it get her an IBM like *this* or *this* . If you are willing to help or don't think she'll need any you can save some money with a Dell or a Gateway (if there is a store close to the school) one of the following would work...

Dell i300m but this Latitude X300 or this Latitude D400 would be better, the Latitudes have a better build quality (almost as good as Apple and IBM)
Dell i600m but this Latitude D600 would be better, as above...
Gateway 200x

As for the ibook or a powerbook they would be great if she has used an Apple before or is quick on the uptake, but might not be the best option if she has only used PCs or is averse to learning new things...
