I'm reorganizing since going from 1 partition to 2, and started to move My Documents to partition 2, then wondered if I should move all of Documents and Settings. What works the best? Thanks.
Well, opinions seem to be divided about that. I decided to go with OS and programs on partition1, and data files on 2. What I didn't know was whether I should transfer all the application data and settings to partition 2 or just the My Documents data files. I'm guessing the latter but thought I'd ask. If theres's a reason NOT to do it this way then please let me know. Thanks.
It's a very valid reason, and a lot of people do it (including me). You can sequester your OS to the very outside of the disk (fastest) and make reinstalls easier because you don't have to backup all your data on the storage partition
OP, you can make a Documents folder on your storage partition, then you can right click the My Documents icon in explorer and tell it to direct to that partition, and do the same for My Music, My Pictures, etc
FWIW, I have 2 WD640gig hd's in Raid1 and an external HD for backing up OS image and storage (separately)....this, after every conceivable type of crash/data loss over the years. yh125d...I'm not sure what you mean when you say right click on C:/..My documents and tell it to direct to the storage partition. I right clicked and couldn't figure out from there....can you explain a bit further? Thanks.
Try this way. Rclick the "My Documents" Icon on the desktop and then in there you should be able to "Find Target folder" Change target Folder....
When you select change target folder, you can browse to the second partition and the documents folder you created
Windows may then advise that it will move music and pics etc as well....and it will also say it will overwrite current contents of the D:\Documents folder. But the folder should be empty since you just created it so no worries.
In Vista (assumption) open up windows explorer and in "favorite links" on the left right click on the Documents link and go to properties. There you can change the target folder to a Documents folder on your other partition. You can do the same for Music, Pictures, etc
